Papakolea Beach, also known as Green Sand beach is located near the Big Island’s southern tip. There aren’t any signs, markers or maps to follow to get to this beach. Papakolea offers one of the best views on the Big Island. The waters here appear clam, but currents can sometimes be strong. There are no lifeguards on this beach, so if the surf’s up, don’t go it. You’ll be miles away from help in case of any emergencies.
A visit to Papakolea Beach can be a full-day trip, so plan accordingly. Be sure to calculate for some beach time and consider the drive time it takes to get to South Point. It is best to leave the beach well before sunset, there are no lights and the terrain is rough.
Carefully drive South Point road eight miles, stay left at the end where there is a sign indicating the Green Sand Beach. From the parking area follow the shore for 2.5 miles until you reach Mahana Bay and Papakolea.
